Every great meal starts with someone who cares.
Behind every breakfast served, every decorated brunch buffet, and every favorite recipe prepared is a team of dedicated culinary professionals who choose to make a difference every single day. While many cooks, servers, and dishwashers could work in traditional restaurants, they have chosen a different path—one where the people they serve become neighbors, friends, and even family.
In this Staff Spotlight, we’re highlighting the incredible individuals who make our dining programs special. Their stories remind us that senior living is about much more than preparing and serving meals—it’s about creating comfort, building relationships, celebrating life’s moments, and making every resident feel at home.
We asked members of our culinary teams to share why they chose senior living and what makes this work so meaningful. Here are their stories.

As Culinary Director at Vitalia Solon, I was inspired to work in senior living because of my mom. When she was placed in a nursing facility, I was disappointed by the food and its presentation. That experience made me want to help create change.
Culinary in senior living gives me the opportunity to provide better service for residents. Food should be prepared with care, pride, and attention to presentation. Residents deserve meals that feel welcoming, comforting, and thoughtfully made.
Residents have taught me that dining should feel like home at every stage of life. Whether someone is in senior living, rehabilitation, a hospital, or their own home, the dining experience matters. A meal can bring comfort, dignity, and a sense of normalcy.
One favorite tradition is the Candlelight Dinner. It gives the culinary team a chance to create a special dining experience for residents. Events like this help make meals feel elevated, personal, and memorable.
Success in this work starts with taking pride in the job. Great service matters. Excellent food matters, too. Together, they create a dining experience residents can enjoy and trust.
That pride shows in daily details. It can be seen in the way food is prepared, presented, and served. It also shows in how the team listens, responds, and cares for residents.
One moment that shows the impact of this work is seeing a resident satisfied. When residents compliment the team on the food or service, it means a great deal. Their feedback is a reminder that the work matters.
Those moments make senior living culinary meaningful. A well-prepared meal can brighten a resident’s day. Great service can help them feel respected and cared for. Together, food and hospitality help make the community feel like home.
Every member of our culinary team has a unique story, but they all share one thing in common—a passion for serving others.
Whether they’re preparing a resident’s favorite comfort food, celebrating a birthday, or simply greeting someone with a smile, their work goes far beyond the kitchen. They create moments of joy, foster meaningful relationships, and help make our communities feel like home.
To every cook, server, dishwasher, and culinary leader who chooses senior living over a traditional restaurant, thank you. Your compassion, dedication, and commitment to hospitality make a lasting impact on the lives of our residents every single day.
Together, we’re not just serving meals—we’re serving memories.
