Cultivating Community Culture

As Resident Services Director at Vitalia Solon, I am the energy and engagement designer of the community. My job description specifically states I am to be a “Culture Creator.” Each day, I work to set the perfect tone for our community events and resident engagements. Providing socialization opportunities in senior living is more than just playing the beloved game of bingo. Beyond the events, essential amenities, and daily care lies the heartbeat of every community – a culture that fosters connection, purpose, and a sense of belonging.

Each monthly calendar features events tailored to the residents’ interests, focusing on key programming elements: physical, cognitive, spiritual, sensory, and social. We always celebrate major holidays in a big way, incorporating traditions from various cultures based on our residents’ backgrounds. Unique to Vitalia Solon and Arrow Senior Living, each month we also celebrate several Arrow Traditions. These include focusing on Black History Month, Mom and Pop Small Business Day, Be Kind to Humankind Week, and so many more! 

Empowering Independence and Passion: Shaping a Culture of Happiness

My favorite way to contribute to our community’s culture is by supporting residents in pursuing their passions and maintaining their independence. As the Resident Services Director, I’m dedicated to dispelling the misconception that seniors lose their sense of self in senior living. I derive immense satisfaction from empowering residents to continue their hobbies and interests through diverse programming, both within and outside our community.

At Vitalia Solon, our residents have a deep appreciation for the arts and an active lifestyle. We nurture these interests with a range of exercise programs like yoga and aerobics, as well as regular outings to the theater, art museum, and Severance Hall. Engaging in lifelong hobbies and discovering new interests is essential for preserving quality of life. Witnessing residents delight in activities they’ve cherished for years, as well as exploring new passions, fosters a culture of happiness and pride within our community.

Culture holds immense significance in senior living as it fosters a sense of enjoyment and belonging for our residents. Many older adults seek senior living for the sense of community it provides. I take great pride in cultivating a community where residents care for one another and cherish the friendships they’ve formed. As the Resident Services Director, I find fulfillment in shaping our community’s culture through meaningful programs and events.

Every senior living community has its own culture built around the engagement and interactions of the residents. I am proud to set the stage for socialization and events for my residents as we continue building and expanding our culture at Vitalia Solon.
