First impressions begin before someone walks through the front door. From the landscaping and building exterior to the lighting, cleanliness, and overall appearance, every detail tells a story. A well-maintained community helps residents, families, and visitors feel welcomed, comfortable, and confident in their surroundings.
As Plant Operations Director at Vitalia Solon, I believe first impressions help residents and prospective residents feel safe, secure, and confident in their surroundings. A community’s appearance says a lot about the attention and care that goes into maintaining it.
When someone walks through our doors, I want them to see an environment that reflects pride in our community. That feeling should continue throughout the building, not just at the entrance.

For me, being truly tour-ready means making sure the entire community is clean and well-maintained.
It’s easy to focus on the entrance because that is where visitors first arrive. However, I believe every area deserves the same attention, from common spaces and hallways to windows and other details throughout the building.
A welcoming environment should feel consistent no matter where someone goes.
I approach our community’s appearance with the same standards I would have for my own home. If I wouldn’t be satisfied with the condition of my home or property, I shouldn’t be satisfied with it here.
That mindset applies to everything from landscaping to interior maintenance.
Walls, trim, doors, and painted surfaces naturally experience wear over time. Staying on top of repairs and touch-ups should be a weekly responsibility rather than something we address only when problems become noticeable.
By making these concerns part of our regular maintenance priorities, we can prevent smaller issues from accumulating.
The same attention should extend outdoors. Landscaping plays an important role in making a community feel welcoming before someone even steps inside.
I believe the grounds should reflect the same care and attention we would give our own properties. When plants, landscaping beds, or other outdoor features fall below that standard, it’s time to consider what improvements are needed.
Lighting is another important part of maintaining a comfortable environment. To me, lighting represents three things: safety, security, and comfort.
Well-lit areas help residents, team members, and visitors move through the community with greater confidence. Consistent lighting also contributes to the overall appearance of the building.
When lights are out or areas are poorly illuminated, they can affect both the atmosphere and how safe a space feels.
Having been with the company for approximately three months, I’m still working toward the improvements I want to accomplish at Vitalia Solon.
I recognize that our building needs attention in certain areas, particularly when it comes to bringing lighting back to the standard I expect.
Rather than point to a completed project, I see this as an opportunity to establish clear priorities for the work ahead.
That starts with taking an honest look at our surroundings and recognizing where improvements are needed. Every community has areas that require ongoing attention, and identifying those concerns is an important part of moving forward.
For other Plant Operations Directors, I believe the same principle applies. Set expectations for how the community should look and feel, then use those expectations to guide maintenance priorities.
Weekly touch-ups, attention to landscaping, and a focus on lighting can all contribute to stronger first impressions.
The goal is not simply to make the building look better for a scheduled tour. It’s to create an environment that residents and families can feel good about every day.
For me, first impressions come down to pride and accountability. If we treat our community with the same attention we give our own homes, we can continue building an environment that feels safe, comfortable, and welcoming.
As I continue growing in my role, that commitment will guide how I approach improvements at Vitalia Solon.
