Moving into a senior living community is a major life transition. While there is often excitement about new opportunities and friendships, there can also be uncertainty as residents adjust to a new home and routine.

One of the most valuable resources we have during that transition is our Resident Ambassador program. Resident Ambassadors help create connections, offer encouragement, and provide the kind of peer-to-peer support that can make a new resident feel welcome from day one. Their willingness to reach out, share their experiences, and invite others into community life helps turn neighbors into friends and a community into home.

As Resident Services Director at Vitalia Solon, I have seen firsthand the difference these resident leaders make in helping new residents feel comfortable, connected, and engaged.

Offering a Warm Welcome From the Start

A successful move-in experience begins with smiles, warm greetings, and friendly introductions as new residents come through the doors. At Vitalia Solon, those first moments help set the tone for the transition and remind each new resident that they are entering a community ready to welcome them.

Team members introduce themselves, and Resident Ambassadors also become part of that early welcome. Their presence helps new residents see friendly faces right away and begin feeling more comfortable in their new surroundings.

Resident Ambassadors are informed when new residents arrive, and they naturally take them under their wings. Whether they are answering questions, offering guidance, or simply being present, they help new residents feel supported as they begin learning their new home.

One meaningful example involved an ambassador who invited a new resident to sit with them for lunch. They talked throughout the meal, turning what could have been an uncertain first dining experience into a friendly and comfortable connection.

Residents often respond quickly to other residents because ambassadors understand firsthand what it feels like to leave a previous home and move into a new community. Resident Ambassadors shape the culture of the community by helping new residents feel recognized and remembered. Resident Ambassadors do far more than welcome new residents—they help build the culture of our community. Through simple acts of kindness, genuine friendships, and a willingness to include others, they create an environment where people feel seen, valued, and connected.
