Across the world, people are living longer than ever before. However, according to the World Health Organization, “evidence suggests the proportion of life in good health has remained broadly constant, implying that the additional years are in poor health.” Taking a proactive approach to aging can help us live full, energetic, and healthy lives no matter how many years we have lived.
As the Director of Wellness at Vitalia Solon, I advocate for proactive aging by promoting healthy eating habits, regular exercise, adequate hydration, sufficient rest, and nurturing lasting relationships.
To manage stress and anxiety, individuals can implement relaxation techniques, express emotions through journaling, or seek support from a support group. Stress and anxiety can have detrimental effects on health as individuals age, increasing the risk of physical and mental illnesses such as high blood pressure, depression, and digestive problems.
Various barriers, including financial constraints, lack of insurance coverage, and limited education about preventative care, can hinder individuals from keeping up with preventive care. The benefits of preventative care include illness and disease prevention, as well as education about its importance.
Encouraging proactive thinking involves reminding individuals to receive annual immunizations, practice good hygiene by washing their hands regularly, and maintain a healthy and balanced diet. By emphasizing these proactive measures, we empower individuals to take charge of their health and well-being.
It is never too late to invest in your health. Taking control of our well-being can be the difference between surviving and thriving, the difference between extra years of truly living and extra years in decline. Make your years count. Approach aging proactively and use those extra years to get another degree, take up a new hobby, break a record, or explore opportunities you never thought you would get to experience.
