Acknowledging Small Businesses

Category: Culture & Traditions

Author: Jess Pope, Executive Director

At Vitalia Solon, we love small businesses. And honestly, if we’re being real, most large businesses started out as a small business at some point. Even Arrow Senior Living, our management company, began as a small business called Turn-Around Solutions. The original vision was simple: step into a community for 6–12 months, get everything running smoothly, and then move on to the next.

The rest of that story is for another time, but it’s a powerful reminder of how something small can grow into something incredible. So, when we say we LOVE small businesses, we truly mean it. Behind every small business is someone’s dream, someone’s risk, and someone’s hard work. That’s something we’re passionate about supporting.

Showing Up for Small Businesses

This Small Business Day, our teams hit the streets in a big way through Creative Follow-Ups and support. Each department head selected a local business to support. Together, as a company, we showed up for over 350 small businesses. Even saying that out loud feels incredible!

What may seem like a small act can make a big impact. Our teams didn’t just stop in. They supported each business by making a purchase or leaving a gift, writing a Google review, and sharing their experience on social media. It was a simple but meaningful way to give back to the communities that support us every day.

Supporting local businesses remains a priority both personally and professionally. These businesses play a critical role in building strong and connected communities. On a personal level, relationships, trust, and identity grow through local connections. They represent more than services. They reflect the individuals and families who shape the character of the community.

Local Partnerships That Enrich Resident Life

As an Executive Director in a senior living community, this value is put into action through intentional partnerships. The team collaborates with local vendors by sourcing fresh products and engaging entertainers and service providers. Local businesses are also invited to participate in community events.

These efforts enrich daily life for residents. They maintain meaningful connections to the surrounding community and create familiar, engaging experiences. Long-standing relationships with local businesses help preserve personal history and strengthen a sense of belonging.

At the same time, investing locally supports the economic vitality of the area. This benefits residents, team members, and the broader community.

Building Meaningful Connections Year-Round

For Small Business Day, the team at Vitalia Solon highlighted several local partners with clear intention. A local church and daycare were selected to foster intergenerational connections that bring joy and purpose to residents. A neighborhood restaurant was chosen to support small businesses competing with larger chains. A local senior home was also recognized to strengthen relationships within the continuum of care.

A team member from Vitalia Solon smiles with a woman at a local business, standing in front of a colorful mural, with a gift from the community.

Throughout the year, the team takes a proactive approach to building these relationships. They partner with local businesses for events, programs, and services. They also stay engaged by attending local events, visiting businesses, and maintaining communication.

By integrating local partners into everyday experiences and special occasions, the team creates meaningful connections for residents. These efforts also support the broader community in lasting ways.

Supporting small businesses isn’t just something we do one day a year. It’s part of how we show up in the greater community every day. These businesses are the heart of our neighborhoods. Building those relationships creates a deeper sense of connection for our residents, our teams, and the people we serve.

As you read through the highlights from our community, I hope you feel the same excitement and pride we do. When we support local, we’re not just making a purchase. We’re investing in people, in dreams, and in the place we call home.
