Building Connection Through Community

Category: Senior Living

Author: Annette Dendy, Resident Services Director

Creating a warm and connected community

As Resident Services Director at Vitalia Solon, I’ve seen firsthand how a strong sense of community transforms senior living from a place to stay into a place to truly thrive. Building connections among residents, team members, and the surrounding neighborhood isn’t just a nice-to-have — it is essential for fostering well-being, joy, and purpose.

Creating community begins with understanding what makes each resident feel valued and included. It also means designing experiences that spark conversation, laughter, and shared memories. Whether it’s a small group gathering, a holiday celebration, an Act of Service, or a themed event, these moments strengthen relationships and help residents feel like they truly belong.

From my perspective, every interaction becomes a chance to weave the fabric of community. As residents connect more deeply, they enjoy their days more fully. They also experience the emotional and social benefits that come from meaningful human connection.

Building relationships that create belonging

To me, community in a senior living setting means giving our residents a true place to call home — a place where they can spend time with family, make new friends, and feel a strong sense of belonging.

Building connections among residents is essential. Strong communication creates a welcoming environment where everyone feels valued and included. As friendships grow, residents experience togetherness and gain a supportive extended family.

I encourage engagement by taking time to know residents personally. When someone seems like they could use encouragement, I connect them with another resident who shares similar interests. These introductions often lead to natural friendships. I also remind residents that living under the same roof makes us family, and families show up for one another.

Additionally, I strengthen our ties with the surrounding community by building relationships with local groups and inviting them to visit. I ask residents for their input on outings or experiences they’d enjoy. Their ideas guide our planning and ensure events reflect their interests.

One of my favorite events that brings everyone together is our Night of Elegance and Dancing with the Stars. These celebrations create joyful opportunities for laughter, connection, and memorable shared moments.

Helping new residents feel at home

To help new residents feel welcome, I introduce myself personally, explain my role, and learn about their hobbies and preferences. I also invite them to upcoming events and check in often as they settle in. By offering steady encouragement and genuine care, I help each person feel comfortable and connected from the very beginning.

At the heart of our community, connections are everything. Every conversation, shared laugh, and meaningful interaction enriches the lives of our residents. As Resident Services Director at Vitalia Solon, I’ve seen how intentional efforts to foster these relationships can transform daily life — turning our building into a true home and creating moments residents and their families will cherish.

By prioritizing relationships, engagement, and a strong sense of belonging, we’re not just planning events — we’re building a vibrant, supportive community where everyone can thrive. Ultimately, the connections we nurture make all the difference.
