VITALIA Active Adult Community® – Solon is Raising Awareness for Men’s Health Month

Men’s Health Month was created in 1992 to raise awareness of the importance of proper screenings, early detection, and obtaining regular medical advice for men and to encourage young men to implement self-care and a healthy lifestyle. Studies show a significant difference between the health of men and the health of women, as men are less likely to seek treatment for preventable diseases. 

I feel there are barriers to men seeking treatment. One of those barriers is the lack of education. Also, men tend to ignore signs of symptoms that something may be wrong because they are fearful of the test results.

Two simple changes that can help create a healthy lifestyle is for medical professionals to educate their male patients when opportunities arise. As medical professionals we should offer emotional support to men’s health. We can offer this support by being always approachable.

Men can help improve their overall health and decrease their risk for serious diseases and illnesses by scheduling annual checkups with doctors and lending their knowledge to support groups. Men can start support groups when they visit a doctor’s office. They can reach out to each other while in waiting rooms, to help deal with the psychological aspects of men’s health.
