Vitalia Active Adult Community – Solon Concentrates on Alzheimer’s Awareness

In 1983, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed November as National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness month, bringing the plight of those facing the diagnosis, and the need for a cure, to the forefront. Today, there are more than 6.2 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s Disease, and while research continues, a cure is yet to be identified. Arrow Senior Living is working to heighten awareness of Alzheimer’s disease during the month of November through discussion and education.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia that affects over three million people a year. Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease that affects memory, thinking, and behavior, and eventually destroys memory and other mental functions. The progression of this disease causes the brain cell connections to degenerate and die which causes the brain to physically shrink. As the disease progresses it can cause changes in cognitive, behavioral, and psychological aspects of the person’s life, often requiring them to have more assistance to complete their daily tasks.

Currently there is no cure for Alzheimer’s. Medications and management strategies can be put in place to temporarily improve symptoms or slow the progression of the disease.

In our Memory Care Neighborhoods, we engage our residents with a positive, person-centered approach. We work to build engagement plans that help detail their likes and interests, so we can utilize different forms of engagement to meet individual needs. We like to find ways to engage our residents in the hobbies they’ve always enjoyed, to give them a sense of comfort and familiarity, allowing them to achieve their best possible quality of life.

Residents with Alzheimer’s benefit from living in our neighborhoods because it creates a homelike environment where they can receive assistance with their daily needs, but still maintain their independence. Our Memory Care Neighborhoods act as another family unit, where they can socialize, engage, and care for one another, while maintaining their freedom of choice and ability to complete tasks they still enjoy.

At Vitalia Active Adult Community – Solon we continue to increase our knowledge of Alzheimer’s through ongoing education, so we can better empower those living with the disease and help their families to better cope. Our Memory Care Neighborhoods maintain awareness of this disease, while offering engagement, safety, and comfort to our residents.
